Most sneakers fit close to your measured size, but a few models run large by the maker’s account. Nike says the Air Force 1 ’07 fits large and recommends ordering a half size down, and the Chuck Taylor All Star page says the same. Jordan 1 and Dunk pages carry no fit note, so start from your measured size.

The fit verdict belongs to the model, not the brand. Nike’s help page points shoppers to “the size section of the product’s page” for style-specific advice, and that is where a “fits large” line appears when there is one.

The table gives each maker’s own fit line where one is published. “No fit note published” means the product page gives a size chart link but no advice to size up or down. Width choices come from listings that show a width selector.

Two patterns stand out. The classic court shoes are where “order a half size down” shows up. The running and walking lines are where you get a real choice of widths.

Why does fit change from one model to the next?

A shoe is built around a last, the foot-shaped form that sets its length, width and toe shape. Two models from the same brand can sit on different lasts, so the same printed size can feel different on your foot.

That is why Nike does not give one verdict for all its shoes. The Air Force 1 ’07 page says “Fits large”; the Air Jordan 1 Low page says nothing about fit at all. The same split shows up at Converse: the Chuck Taylor All Star carries a half-size-down note, and the Chuck 70 does not.

Style can matter too. A high top wraps the ankle and a low top does not, but neither Nike nor Converse gives a separate size rule for high and low versions of the same model. The Chuck Taylor note appears on both the high top and the low top pages.

Tip

Read the fit line on the exact product page you are buying from, not a general brand rule. When a page says “Fits large; we recommend ordering a half size down,” follow it. When it says nothing, buy your measured size.

How do you use a maker’s size chart?

Every Nike product page links a size guide, and Nike’s help page confirms there is “a ‘Size Guide’ link to the appropriate size chart on all of our product pages.” The steps below follow Nike’s own measuring instructions.

  1. Tape paper to a hard floor. Stand on it with your weight even.
  2. Mark the longest toe and the back of the heel. A second person keeps the pen straight.
  3. Measure between the marks. That is your foot length.
  4. Repeat with the other foot. Nike notes it is common for one foot to be slightly longer.
  5. Use the longer foot. Find that length on the chart.
  6. Size up if you fall between sizes. That is Nike’s stated rule.

Then check the product page. If it says the shoe fits large, take the half size down from your chart size. Our guide to measuring your feet covers width as well as length, and the shoe size chart explains how US, UK and EU numbers line up.

Watch for unisex sizing

Several classics are sold in unisex sizes printed as a men’s and a women’s number. Nike’s unisex chart pairs men’s 8 with women’s 9.5. Zappos lists the Vans Sk8-Hi measured in “Men’s 9, Women’s 10.5”. On these shoes, read across the chart rather than ordering your usual women’s number from memory. Our men’s to women’s shoe size page explains the conversion.

What if you have wide feet?

Nike’s Air Force 1 ’07 page offers sizes only, with no wide option, and the Nike and Converse fit notes speak about length, not width. If a standard Air Force 1 or Chuck pinches across the forefoot, sizing up adds length you may not need.

Hoka and New Balance are the brands here where a separate width shows up. Zappos lists the men’s Clifton 10, 990v6 and 574 Core in D (medium), 2E (wide) and 4E (extra wide). Hoka sells the Bondi 9 as its own X Wide version. Start with shoes for wide feet and the shoe width chart to see what the letters mean.

Frequently asked questions

Do Nike shoes run big or small?

It depends on the model, not the brand. Nike tells shoppers the Air Force 1 '07 fits large and to order a half size down, while its Air Jordan 1 and Dunk pages carry no such note. Check the Size and Fit line on the exact product page.

Should I size up or down if I am between sizes?

Nike's size chart says to size up when your foot measurement falls between two sizes. The exception is a model whose product page tells you to order a half size down, such as the Air Force 1 '07 or the Chuck Taylor All Star.

Do Converse run big?

The Chuck Taylor All Star does. Its product page on nike.com says it fits large and recommends ordering a half size down. The Chuck 70 page carries no fit note, so start from your measured size on the Converse chart.

Which popular sneakers come in wide widths?

Running and walking lines are where width choices show up. Zappos lists the men's Hoka Clifton 10 and the New Balance 990v6 and 574 Core in D, 2E and 4E, and Hoka sells an X Wide version of the Bondi 9.
