The surest way to avoid fake sneakers is to buy from the brand or a reputable retailer, as U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) advises. Anywhere else, treat a price far below retail as the first warning, since CBP calls price the most important red flag. Then check the seller, the photos, the box label and the stitching.

No single check proves a pair is genuine. Each one below removes some risk, and together they tell you when to walk away.

What are the red flags in a listing?

CBP’s tips for avoiding online counterfeits start with the price. It calls price “the most important red flag” and says counterfeiters sell fakes at a 50% to 70% discount for a quick sale.

The rest of CBP’s list applies to any sneaker shop or listing:

  • The website. Look for grammatical errors, misspellings, and foreign or suspicious web addresses.
  • The reviews. CBP warns that counterfeiters may use fake reviews.
  • Customer service. Make sure the seller has a working US phone number and a real US address, and contact them before you buy.

In an earlier warning, CBP advised buying only from reputable retailers, being wary of third-party vendors, and checking seller reviews.

What to check on the shoes and the box

CBP describes how counterfeit footwear often looks. The table turns that into checks you can make on photos or in hand.

Check What a problem looks like Source
Stitching Poor or uneven stitches CBP
Logos Logos the wrong size or shape CBP
Labels Labels that peel CBP
Box and packaging Low-quality ink or printing errors CBP
Materials Fragile fabrics CBP
Style code A code on the box label or tag that does not match the maker’s page for that colorway Nike product pages

Nike’s product pages list a style code. The white Air Force 1 ’07, for example, shows “Style: CW2288-111.” Ask the seller for clear photos of the box label and the size tag inside the shoe, and compare any style code you see with the maker’s page for the same colorway.

Treat online “legit check” guides from resellers with care. They are opinions, not brand guidance. If you have doubts about a pair, choose a listing that is authenticated before it ships, or a seller with easy returns.

How does eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee work for sneakers?

eBay runs its own check for eligible sneakers. Its sneaker page and help page describe the terms:

  • Which pairs: select models from listed brands, including Nike, Jordan, Adidas, New Balance, Converse and Vans. They must be listed in men’s or women’s athletic shoes, boys’, girls’, unisex kids’ or baby shoes, in new or pre-owned condition, above a minimum price that eBay states on its sneaker page.
  • How to spot it: eligible listings show a blue Authenticity Guarantee checkmark, and there is a filter for them in search.
  • What happens: the seller ships to an authentication facility instead of to you. Authenticators perform a multi-point physical inspection and confirm the item matches the listing, generally within 2 business days.
  • If it fails: eBay says the item will not be sent on and you get your money back. For a minor mismatch, eBay contacts you to ask whether you still want it.
  • Cost: eBay calls the service free for eligible sneakers, and buyers pay a flat shipping fee shown at checkout.
  • Exclusions: customized shoes are not authenticated, and miscategorized or “lot” listings get a condition check only. A seller who ships straight to you skips authentication.

Note

eBay states that Authenticity Guarantee is independent from, and not associated with, any brand sold on eBay. It is eBay’s check, not the maker’s.

Get the size right as well

A genuine pair in the wrong size is still the wrong pair. Check the maker’s chart before you buy, using the shoe size chart and how to measure your feet.

Popular models do not all fit the same. See how sneakers fit, including Jordan 1 sizing and Air Force 1 sizing, before you choose a size.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell if sneakers are fake?

Start with the price and the seller: U.S. Customs and Border Protection says fakes are often sold at 50% to 70% off. Then look for uneven stitching, badly sized logos, peeling labels and printing errors on the box, which CBP lists as signs of counterfeit footwear.

Does eBay check if sneakers are real?

For eligible listings, yes. Sneakers with the Authenticity Guarantee checkmark go to an authentication facility for a multi-point physical inspection before they ship, and eBay refunds you if authenticity cannot be verified.

Is the Authenticity Guarantee free on eBay?

eBay says the service is free for eligible shoes and sneakers. Its sneaker page adds that buyers pay a flat shipping fee, shown at checkout, for sneakers that qualify.

Are sneakers without a box fake?

Not necessarily. eBay's condition terms include new without box, meaning unworn shoes that are not in their original packaging. A missing box removes one way to check the pair, so look harder at the seller and the photos.
