general rule

From the makers' own size charts and the sources listed at the end of this page.

Hoka sizing starts with your measured length, and the bigger choice is width. Popular models come in more than one width: Zappos lists the men’s Clifton 10 in D, 2E and 4E, and Hoka sells the Bondi 9 as a separate X Wide version. Order your measured size, then pick the width that matches your foot.

That is the main difference from classic court sneakers. With a Chuck Taylor or an Air Force 1, a tight fit across the foot leaves only one lever: length. With a Hoka road shoe, you can keep your length and change the width.

Do Hokas run true to size?

The surest guide is the fit note on the Hoka product page for the exact model you want, plus Hoka’s size chart. Run your own check first:

  1. Measure both feet, heel to longest toe, and use the longer one. Our foot measuring guide explains how.
  2. Measure width across the widest part of the foot, as the same guide shows.
  3. Find your length on Hoka’s size chart.
  4. Read the product page for any fit note on that model.
  5. Choose the width that matches your width measurement.

Running shoes are worn with the socks you run in. Measure in those socks, since a thicker running sock takes up room at the toe.

Which Hoka models come in wide?

Hoka’s Clifton and Bondi road shoes are where the width choices show up. Here is what the listings show:

Hoka model Width choices Source
Clifton 10 (men’s) D medium, 2E wide, 4E extra wide Zappos listing
Bondi 9 (women’s) B medium, D wide, 2E extra wide Zappos listing
Bondi 9 X Wide (men’s) Its own X Wide version HOKA
Bondi 9 X-Wide (women’s) Its own X-Wide version HOKA

Zappos writes 2E as “EE.” The two mean the same width.

The Bondi is the one Hoka sells under its own X Wide name, so it shows up as a separate product rather than a width option on the main page. If you search a store for Bondi 9, look for the X Wide listing as well.

How do Hoka width letters work?

The letters follow the usual US system, which shifts between men’s and women’s shoes. On the listings above:

  • Men’s: D is medium, 2E is wide and 4E is extra wide.
  • Women’s: B is medium, D is wide and 2E is extra wide.

So a women’s D and a men’s D are not the same width. A woman who needs a wide Hoka looks for D; a man looks for 2E. Our shoe width chart covers the letters in full.

Tip

If your toes feel squeezed but the heel fits, try the next width up in the same length before you go up a full size. A longer shoe can slip at the heel.

Wide Hokas for walking and standing

Hoka lists the Bondi 9 X Wide as best for everyday runs, lifestyle wear, walking and recovery. If that is your use, the width deserves as much attention as the size, since you will be on your feet for hours at a time.

For broader feet, start with the wide or X Wide version of the shoe that matches your use, then check the length. Our guides to wide toe box running shoes and extra wide shoes compare Hoka with other brands sold in 4E.

Frequently asked questions

Should I size up in Hokas?

Start from your measured length rather than sizing up by habit. If a Hoka feels tight across the foot, a wider width in the same length is often a better fix than a longer shoe, since the Clifton and Bondi are sold in more than one width.

Do Hokas come in wide?

Yes, on popular models. Zappos lists the men's Clifton 10 in D, 2E and 4E, and the women's Bondi 9 in B, D and 2E. Hoka sells the Bondi 9 as its own X Wide version for men and women.

Is a women's D the same as a men's D in Hoka?

No. On women's Hoka listings, B is medium and D is wide. On men's listings, D is medium and 2E is wide. The same letter means a different width depending on whether the shoe is sized for men or women.
