Men’s wide sneakers are labeled 2E, and extra wide is 4E. Brooks, ASICS and New Balance all list both on their width charts, and New Balance goes up to 6E. Nike sells its Pegasus, Structure and Vomero running lines in wide or extra wide, and Hoka sells some models in Wide and X Wide.
What 2E and 4E mean for men
The standard men’s width is D. Wide is 2E and extra wide is 4E, on the charts of Brooks, ASICS and New Balance. New Balance adds 6E, which it labels XX-Wide.
How much room each step adds depends on the maker. Nike says a wide shoe is usually about one centimeter wider than the regular version, and extra wide about one centimeter wider again. ASICS describes its steps as a couple of millimeters, scaled to the size of the shoe. Treat the letter as a guide, not a measurement. The shoe width chart lines up men’s and women’s letters side by side.
Which makers sell men’s 2E and 4E?
| Maker | Wide (2E) | Extra wide (4E) | Beyond 4E | How it is labeled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Balance | Yes | Yes | 6E | Letters from 2A to 6E |
| Brooks | Yes | Yes | No | Wide, extra wide |
| ASICS | Yes | Yes | No | WIDE or EXTRA WIDE in the product name |
| Hoka | Some models | Some models | Not stated | Wide, X Wide |
| Nike | Some lines | Some lines | Not stated | Wide, extra wide |
| Topo Athletic | Select models | Not stated | Not stated | Toe box and midfoot letters |
A “No” in the table means the maker’s chart stops at 4E. A model sold in 2E is not always sold in 4E, so check the width menu for the exact shoe and size.
ASICS names specific models in its guide to wide running shoes: the GEL-NIMBUS 28 and GEL-KAYANO 33 in Wide, and the GT-2000 14 in Extra Wide.
Nike lists basketball and training options for wide feet. It says the KD18 is built to accommodate wide feet and that the G.T. Cut Academy has a wider, taller toe box than its other basketball shoes.
Topo Athletic makes wide sizes in select models. Its wide men’s shoe is a 2E in the toe box and an E in the midfoot and heel.

New Balance for wide feet
New Balance lists more men’s widths than the other makers here: extra narrow 2A, narrow B, standard D, wide 2E, extra wide 4E and XX-Wide 6E. It is the only chart here that goes past 4E.
Not every New Balance model comes in every width. The width menu on each product page shows which letters exist for that shoe. The New Balance sizing guide covers how its lengths and widths fit, and extra wide shoes goes deeper on 4E and 6E.

How to tell if a 2E fits
Tip
Do not size up to get more width. Nike says a longer shoe adds length but no forefoot width, and AAOS suggests a wider width or a brand with a wider toe box instead.
Once you have a pair on, check these points:
- No pinching across the ball of the foot. Nike lists pinching, blisters along the sides of the foot and the foot spilling over the midsole as signs you need a wider shoe.
- Room at the front. AAOS calls for at least 1/2 inch between your longest toe and the tip of an athletic shoe.
- A heel that stays put. AAOS says the heel counter should grip the heel.
- Try them on late in the day. AAOS advises trying athletic shoes on after a full day or after a workout, when feet have swelled.
If you run, the wide toe box running shoes guide covers running-specific fit. For everything else on wide feet, start at the wide feet guide.
